What is time and a half?

Time and a half means 1.5 times a regular hourly rate. It is a quick way to find the premium rate for a wage.

Time-and-a-half rate = regular hourly rate x 1.5Time-and-a-half pay = time-and-a-half rate x hours

Example: $20/hour

For a $20 hourly rate, time and a half is $20 x 1.5, or $30/hour. For 5 hours, that is $150 in time-and-a-half pay.

Time and a half pay for multiple hours

Once you know the 1.5x rate, multiply it by the number of time-and-a-half hours. The calculator also compares that amount with regular-rate pay for the same hours.

Time and a half vs regular pay

Regular pay for 5 hours at $20/hour is $100. Time-and-a-half pay for those same hours is $150, so the premium increase is $50.

Time and a half vs overtime pay

This page calculates the 1.5x rate itself. The Overtime Pay Calculator combines regular and overtime hours using a configurable threshold and multiplier.
