How to convert salary to hourly pay

To convert an annual salary to an estimated hourly rate, divide the salary by the number of hours worked in a year. This page uses the weekly hours and weeks per year you enter, rather than assuming every person works the same schedule.

Hourly rate = annual salary / (hours per week x weeks per year)Annual working hours = hours per week x weeks per year

Example

For a $60,000 salary, 40 hours per week, and 52 weeks per year, annual working hours are 40 x 52 = 2,080.

$60,000 / 2,080 = $28.85 per hourWeekly pay: $60,000 / 52 = $1,153.85Biweekly pay: $1,153.85 x 2 = $2,307.69Monthly pay: $60,000 / 12 = $5,000.00

Salary to weekly, biweekly and monthly pay

The related pay amounts are simple gross conversions. Weekly pay divides salary by weeks worked per year. Biweekly pay doubles the weekly amount. Monthly pay divides annual salary by 12.

What if you work fewer than 52 weeks?

Changing weeks worked per year changes the hourly equivalent. If the annual salary stays the same and the number of working weeks is lower, the calculated hourly equivalent becomes higher because the salary is spread across fewer working hours.

This is an arithmetic comparison only. It does not describe an employer payroll policy or decide how a salary is actually paid.

Salary vs hourly pay

This calculator compares gross arithmetic equivalents between salary and hourly pay. It does not say which compensation type is better, and it does not include taxes, benefits, deductions, bonuses, reimbursements, or overtime eligibility rules.
